Once the site of a coal-related industrial waste facility, a 60-plus-acre property in Freetown, Massachusetts, has been given a new purpose as a source of clean energy. After the former fly-ash landfill closed and was capped in 2001, the property was unsuitable for agriculture or residential development. Working with the Town of Freetown and applying careful engineering to the unique site conditions, Borrego Solar Systems—now operating as New Leaf Energy—secured a post-closure permit to develop a 12.5 MWdc solar project on the landfill.
